How We Grade Question Period

Our methodology for grading Question Period exchanges using letter grades (A+ to F).

Overview

SpinDetector analyzes the daily exchanges between the Leader of the Opposition and the Prime Minister during Question Period in the Canadian House of Commons. Our goal is to provide Canadians with an objective measure of political accountability.

We use official Hansard transcripts as our primary data source, ensuring accuracy and transparency in our analysis.

What We Grade

Opposition Leader: Question Grade

We evaluate the quality of questions asked by the Leader of the Opposition based on:

  • Clarity: Is the question clear and understandable?
  • Specificity: Does it ask for specific information or action?
  • Evidence: Is it grounded in facts, data, or documented events?
  • Directness: Does it demand a clear yes/no or specific answer?

Grade Scale:

A (90-100%)
B (80-89%)
C (70-79%)
D (60-69%)
F (0-59%)

Prime Minister: Answer Grade

We grade how directly the Prime Minister answers the question. We're strict - did they actually answer what was asked?

  • Directness: Did they answer the actual question?
  • Specificity: Did they provide concrete information?
  • Honesty: Did they acknowledge the premise if valid?
  • Completeness: Did they address all parts of the question?

Grade Scale:

A Direct answer
B Mostly answers
C Partial answer
D Barely answers
F Non-answer

Note: Most Question Period answers receive an F because they don't actually answer the question asked.

Data Sources

All analysis is based on official transcripts from:

  • Hansard: The official verbatim record of proceedings in the House of Commons
  • ParlVU: Video recordings for verification when needed

We do not editorialize or interpret beyond what is said in the official record.
